But something seems very wrong about this... It's as if your OS version has changed. It's a long shot, but check "About this Mac" from the Apple menu, and make sure it says 10.8.5. My other guess would be that Installer is messed up and (ironically) needs to be reinstalled.
I did think that a complete reinstall was a bit OTT but it seems to of done the trick and only took 45mins. Im sure that it was something very simple like a tick box somewhere or something or maybe a bug in OSX 10.8.5. Thank you all for you your help and suggestions. Everything is back up and running now. Maybe we should keep this thread open to see if other user experience the same problems. Thanks again.

I decided to install and play around with Pygame today, mainly as an excuse to write some Python for a minor departure from all the Javascript/Coffeescript I've been writing lately. Unfortunately the process wasn't entirely frictionless, due to Pygame not yet accounting for Apple's move to XQuartz as the recommended X11 implementation for Mac OS as of 10.8 Mountain Lion. As a result I ran into some compilation errors while Pygame was building it's native extensions, which fortunately were not too hard to fix as I had some familiarity with changes to X11 on Mountain Lion.
For Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8), it doesn't work, because my MacBook isn't supported by Mountain Lion, even though I actually want to install 10.8 on my iMac at home, so the app store won't let me buy it.

I used this to download Mavericks on a late 2006 model Mac mini with 2GB of RAM. Mavericks won't install or run on it, but I was able to use the downloaded app along with tools from the "tonymacx86.com" website to make a USB installer to install on a PC to make a customac (aka a hackintosh)
